Free Play: Why Children Need Time Without an Agenda

When Schedules Take Over Childhood

In a big city like Jakarta, children's lives are often packed with schedules. Math tutoring, coding classes, swimming lessons, language courses, all with good intentions from parents who want to give their best.

But there is something we may be unknowingly taking away: empty time. Time where a child does not have to do anything, does not have to produce anything, does not have to be anything other than themselves.

What Happens When Children Are Left to Play?

Study after study shows that free play is one of the most important activities in child development. Not guided play, not directed play, but play that springs from the child's own impulse.

During free play, children:

  • Develop imagination and creativity
  • Learn to manage conflict and negotiate
  • Sharpen problem-solving skills
  • Build emotional resilience
  • Discover genuine interests and talents

Playing in Nature: One Step Further

At Taman Meraki, we believe that playing outdoors in nature brings an extra dimension that no indoor play space can replace.

Soil, sand, water, leaves, twigs: these are the richest raw materials for a child's imagination. There is no rulebook for how to play with them. There is no wrong way.

Let children play in the mud. Let them get soaking wet. Let them discover the world with their own hands.

Starting at Home

You do not need a large garden to start. Just set aside time every day, half an hour, an hour, where your child is free to play without gadgets, without direction, without a target. Observe what they do. You will be surprised by the richness of their imagination.
